Vegan Smart Brunch!

Hello my follower bloggers! I hope you all had a wonderful week. If not, TGIF! 🙂

This past Sunday, I had the wonderful opportunity to go to the first VeganSmart Brunch located in Wynwood hosted by Badass Vegan and Miami Vegan Life crew! This was the first time ever an event was put together and let me just say, if you weren’t there, you definitely missed out!

The food was spectacular, there were good vibes from everyone who attended, the music was playing and the live art: amazing!

I am hoping that there are more vegan events like this in Miami coming soon!

Now, picture time!

I’m back!

Due to technical malfunctions of my laptop and in between visiting family, I have not been able to post anything for a while. BUT I’M BACKKKK! 🙂

I can’t believe it’s been three weeks since I left Farm Sanctuary and I miss it so much. My last couple of days were extraordinary. Sure, I had work but it was sad knowing I had to say goodbye to all my farm animal friends. It was bittersweet. I still get updates from my coworkers on how everyone is doing. Its unreal that I felt I was leaving a part of my soul there. Acton had been my home for three months and jumping back into a world where not everyone is vegan is a challenge that I had forgotten.

I went to visit my family in Texas for a week and let me tell you, boy it is hard to be a vegan in the BBQ capital of the U.S. Everywhere I went, there were steakhouses and BBQ style restaurants. The smell of meat cooking filled the air and it made me sick to my stomach. You can actually see cattle grazing pastures by the highways and by homes. My first instinct was to jump out of my car and give them love but the feeling was different. These cattle had tags on their ears, numbers instead of names. It broke my heart knowing that within a few shorts months, they would no longer be here. They would be on somebody’s plate. There were calves playing in the field and I knew that someday, they would be stuck in a veal crate waiting for their death. It fills my heart with sadness and anger when I think about it.

That is why we have to make a change. We have to be a voice for these animals that can’t. I’m not saying criticize everyone in your life who eats meat and dairy because then they won’t listen to you . Trust me, I come from a family of vegetarians who can’t give up cheese. However, I find that informing people nicely of how well a vegan lifestyle is sparks their curiosity. When people ask me what I eat and I say everything, they ask me how is that possible. We have to break down vegan stereotypes. I respect vegans who spread the message out there that a vegan lifestyle is the best choice but to get people to change on a deeper level, we have to put the information out there and see what they choose to do with that information. That’s how Farm Sanctuary has impacted people all over the world. It’s how so many see that they are harming animals with spirits and personalities.

Since I am back in sunny Miami, I will still do restaurant reviews of places I went to in California before I start doing ones from Miami. You would think Miami would have a variety of vegan restaurants! I am attending a vegan brunch next week by That Miami Vegan Life so there will be a post on that 🙂

I will post pictures of all the amazing animals that I’ve had a pleasure of working with so stay tuned!

All my love followers,

Restaurant Review: Gracias Madre

So my roommate and I went to Gracias Madre, a plant-based Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood. Needless to say, I loved it!

The mood and the decor was beautiful and perfect for Saturday night 🙂 We sat at a communal table, which was my first time doing so. The outside had lights hung and beautiful trees planted. Perfect setting to be sipping wine!

I had the black bean burger with cole saw and although it was delicious, it was a little spicy for my taste. I had to sip water in between bites but then again my spice level is not high at all :p

It was a pretty busy night there so service was a little slow, but our server was super nice and helpful.

Animal Rescue Stories: Paolo

Paolo was obtained by animal control after being seized from an abusive farm. The farmer did not treat his animals after they were attacked by coyotes. Paolo was left with a large, opened wound on his left side that was high risk for infection. Rather than seeking veterinarian care, the farmer clumsily duct-taped the wound closed. Today, Paolo is all healed and is sweet as can be.

Look at this precious face!

Animal Rescue Stories: Momma Claire and Baby Erika

In February 2013, Animal Control officers rescued more than a dozen sheep, one goat, and a calf who were struggling to stay alive on bread scraps from a backyard butcher in the Los Angeles area. The bodies of victims who had already perished lay nearby. Farm Sanctuary welcomed the group and took them into our care. Most of the animals were transported to the Northern California Shelter, leaving only Claire (the rescue’s sole goat) and Felicity (her dear sheep friend) to reside at the Los Angeles sanctuary. On March 12, during their evening rounds, Southern California Shelter caregivers discovered that Claire had just given birth to a daughter, who we have named Erika. The arrival was a surprise, but a very happy one. Erika was tiny and bursting with life!

Erika is still young, so she is very curious and playful. And at times, she is quite demanding! Having been born into a sanctuary setting, Erika will never know cruelty (which is amazing). She has been treated as a princess since the day she was born and never hesitates to ask for what she wants — sometimes very loudly.

Erika has the luxury of being raised by not only one, but two mother-figures — her mother, Claire, and her Aunt Felicity, who is a sheep. The two watch over Erika carefully. Erika spends every afternoon playing on the hillside or snoozing in the sun — with her “Moms” close by.

This little goat is happy anytime food is near! Erika knows her feeding times and will announce them at the top of her lungs!

Erika is on the left with brown and white fur and Claire is on the right 🙂

Animal Rescue Stories: Bear

Since my internship is ending in one week, I have decided to post an animal story per day. Today I am starting with Bear.

When Los Angeles-area animal control agents found Bear in an abandoned barn, the tiny newborn lamb’s umbilical cord was still attached and had not been cleaned. Her mother was nowhere in sight, nor were any other sheep. Bear may have been left behind when the flock was moved to a new location. At the most vulnerable time of her life, this little girl was completely alone.

Fortunately, the agents knew to contact Alicia Pell, a volunteer rescuer who has played a pivotal role in a number of our Southern California Shelter rescues. Alicia called Farm Sanctuary immediately and then rushed Bear to our veterinarian’s office. When Bear arrived, she was dehydrated and limp. She had not nursed from her mother, so medical attention was imperative. The clinic staff started her on IV fluids, and, thankfully, she took to a bottle quickly.

Because Bear had been denied the chance to nurse from her mother, she did not receive the vital, immunity boosting colostrum that baby ruminants can receive only from a mother’s milk. Without these essential nutrients, the young lamb’s improperly treated umbilicus posed a serious threat for infection. Bear had also been deprived of the incredibly close, affectionate bond that mother sheep share with their babies. Despite this loss, Bear still has a lot of love and joy to give, much to the delight of all her new friends.

Once Bear gained a little strength, she quickly set about endearing herself to her caretakers at the veterinary clinic, where she received the special care and observation she needed. Soon, she was up and about, following staff members around the office. After a couple of days, Bear was ready to come to the Southern California Shelter. Although she was isolated from our other animals until her immune system is stronger, Bear was already making friends with the goats and sheep whose enclosure borders the shelter office. This vocal girl frequently communicates with a one-year-old goat named Erika and with Mary, an elderly sheep who is intrigued by her mysterious and talkative new neighbor.

Someone once overlooked Bear, abandoning her to suffer a lonely and painful end. Here at the shelter, however, this winsome new resident is impossible to ignore. Now, a year later after she was rescued, Bear is thriving at the shelter and is possibly the cutest lamb I have ever met. I hope to keep Bear’s spirit in my mind and heart when I leave.

A Night Out with Gene Baur

hey everyone! I apologize for falling off the bandwagon for not blogging as much. I’m trying to enjoy my last month of interning. I will soon post some food reviews and some interesting conversation pieces I’ve had with fellow vegans.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a book launch event/conversation hosted by Joel Stein with Gene Baur and Moby.

I really found it inspiring to have met the man who founded such a great organization. Props to you Gene

I also had the pleasure of meeting Moby who made the conversation witty and interesting.

I had such a lovely night with the other interns and I really do love that a lot of vegans united for Gene and for his new book, Living the Farm Sanctuary Life.

Anyways my roommate and the other shelter intern left today so I will be flying solo for the month of April. We’ll see how this goes 🙂
